Tuesday Folders
Your child will have a folder that will be sent home every Tuesday. It is to be returned every Wednesday. There are three sections to the folder. The left side (labeled "Return to School" ) contains important items from the office, PTA or our class. These items may need to be filled out and returned to school. The middle section has your child's weekly behavior report. No news is good news! The report has information both on their social/develpomental behavior as well as academic behavior. This needs to be initialed and left in the folder each week. The third section (labeled "Keep at Home") will contain papers from the office or PTA to let you know what is going on at Root as well as your child's work from the previous week. You will need to take these papers out and keep them at home.
Homework
Your child will be getting monthly and weekly homework assignments. These are activites to be done at home to reinforce skills taught at school.
Here's how it will work:
Here's how it will work:
- "Monthly Homework" should be turned in during the last week of that month.
- "Weekly Homework", no matter what day it is sent home, should be sent back to school in the Tuesday Folder. Weekly Homework is usually Math from the county.
- Tuesday: Tuesday Folder comes home with finished work, notes from school and homework assignments. Homework is to sit down with your child and go through the work your child has completed. This will give you both time to review and praise your child's hard work.
- Wednesday: In the Journal notebook have your child draw a picture. Practice any skills noted in the Tuesday letter.
- Thursday: Your child will write about the picture in the journal. You will receive a rubric with more directions in the journal.
- Friday: Writing Journals are to be turned in so I have the weekend to review them.
- Monday: Do any math sheets.
- Tuesday: Put the sheets in the Tuesday Folder and return the folder to school on Wednesday.
Snacks
Please be sure to send in a HEALTHY snack each day (fruit, yogurt, veggies, protein, etc). Also, keep in mind that they will only have 10-15 minutes for snack. We have a late lunch and the children will need healthy "Brain Food". Be sure that if your child brings their lunch that you remind them which is the snack and which is the lunch.

Birthdays
We love to get new books for our classroom library donated in your child's honor. You can wrap it as a present to the class and come in to read it to us. We also enjoy a small treat if you so desire. The small cupcakes, donut holes are some ideas you might consider. You can send them in with your child.
Enrichment
Throughtout the year we will have several Enrichment activities. An Enrichment is a learning experience in the classroom where parents are involved in the learning process. The children have an art activity, a special snack and a story. The Enrichment Parents will be responsible for coming up with the craft, a snack and a story. There may be other opoportunities for parents to come and help. We will let you know about these opportunities when they come up.
Volunteers
We love having parents volunteer in the classroom! It is one of the highlights of the year. By volunteering in the classroom you build a strong bond with your child's classmates. You also have first hand knowledge of what your child's center time is like. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom there is registration that you MUST complete. All volunteers must be registered and approved by Wake County Public School System. Parents need to register every year. If you have previously registered for another student in Wake County, you must re-register each year.
Report Cards and Conferences
Your child will recieve a report card at the end of each nine weeks. This is good information as to how your child is progressing. I will be scheduling two conferences during the school year. One will be at the end of the first quarter and the second will be at the end of the third quarter. I will be available for conferences if at any time you are interested. You can contact me by email and we will schedule a time to chat.
Absences and Tardies
If your child is absent from school PLEASE BE SURE TO SEND A NOTE when they return to school so that the absence may be properly marked excused or unexcused. If you do not send a note within two days of your child's return it will be marked "unexcused". If your child is going somewhere you feel is educational then you may get an "Educational Opportunity" form from the office or online and fill it out prior to your trip. Mrs. Garrettson and Mr. Clark will read the form. Mr. Clark will approve an excused absence if he feels it is eductional and follows our curriculm. It is important that your children ARRIVE ON TIME each school day. if your child is late you will need to walk them to the office and recieve a tardy slip before they come to the classroom. I begin teaching lessons at 9:15 am. If your child is late, they are missing instruction. Please try to schedule appointments and activites after school. When your child leaves early they miss out on important learning opportunities and fun. If your child leaves prior to 12:30 pm and does not return to school, he/she is marked absent for the day.
Rest Time
Please send in a beach towel that is clearly labeled with your child's name. We will rest for about 15-30 minutes at the beginning of the school year and shorten it as the year goes on. I feel it is important to give the children time to rest and regroup. I have found this helps them perform better during the second half of the day.
Share Time
All classmates will be given a day during the week to share something with the class. It can be an item of interest or something to tell. I believe this gives the children practice expressing themselves in front of a group of people. They gain confidence in language expression and how to deliver information to others.
